Trying to gather information for a eulogy on Ross Francis, recently deceased. He was a memeber of 3 Coy, C Pro C (M) Montreal, and they had a M/C unit and had the privilege of escorting President Eisenhower at the opening of the St Lawrence Seaway. Having been given many drill sessions by the Big G, before he left for England. Look in his museum for their appreciation of him they gave the G a swagger stick with G. Elliott,3 Coy, C Pro C (M) engraved on it. Ross rose to the dizzy ranks of WO2 (M), grateful for any historical, or personal notes on the unit and any frinds of Ross.

Today was an interesting day. I posted an item for sale on kijiji and a man and his wife drove all the way from Middle Musquodobit, NS to purchase it. It turns out that his wife, who was with him, is the daughter of the late CWO Bob Parker. She talked about his days with SIU Halifax and earlier postings when she was young. She said he passed away about 6 years ago and that he would be 82 today. I have heard of him over the years but never met him. It's a small world.

Read the previous entry by my former Provost colleague (4 Pro PL), John Collins, and it truly is a fine example of the patriotism of most of those WWII Vets. I experienced a similar situation here in my hometown this morning (11 Nov) where I paraded with several former WWII Vets and yes; their stamina is unbelieveable. I was also proud to see that a large contingent of 3 Pro Coy (Halifax Militia MP) on parade who also played an active part in the vigil and the escorting of wreath layers, one escorting myself while I laid the wreath on behalf of my federal MP, Mr Peter Stoffer for the Govt Of Canada.

This morning I had the privilege and honour of meeting and parading with a WWII veteran of the CProC at the Cenotaph in Woodstock. He is Mr Fred PETERS, who enlisted in the RCR in 1939 and went to England with them. He transferred to the Provost in 1941, No. 6 Provost Coy, and was at the D-Day landings with 6 Coy. After the war, he returned to Woodstock and pursued a career in the engineering field for the next 40 plus years. Hwe marched with us and swears " same time next year". What an example. He is not on Line, has "no use for the stuff", but I told him I would be entering our meeting on this site and he seemed pleased that it exists. Aparet from the obvious, it made my Remembrance Day special. A great ceremony, by the way, and well attended.

I will be attending a Remembrance Day Service in Bowmanville Ontario where my Step Daughter who is a CPL in the Canadian Armed Services will be in attendance. I am so proud of my father, his friends and my Step Daughter and husband who are both in the Service. My son-in-law recently returned from his 2nd tour in Afghanistan. How my father would have been proud of both of them. I am sure he will be there tomorrow in spirit.

Hi, great site, I found it while researching and seen my grandfather's name on the Honor Roll. My grandfather was Sgt Melvin Grant Pearo of the Canadian Provost Corps. He served in the army from 1940-1947 and was stationed overseas for most of that time. I don't know what company he would have been in and would like to know how to find that information out. We spoke with the nursing station at 2 PM EDT Oct 11th and we were advised Joe was snoozing and we learned best to phone for him at supper time, which we did at 5:30 PM EDT. He was quite thankful for our call, however, his voice was quite weak and understandably so after his heart valve replacement. Had a visit from Wally Klodziechuk yesterday(1 Sep 10). He and Darlene dropped in to Chebogue. A lot of war stories and a lot of names crossed the room. Just going through messages looking for old friends. Upon spotting Wally Kolodziechuk's name, I was taken back to Gagetown and traffic control duties. I remember at Christmas doing T.C. while wearing a flashing greed cross strap that the boss decided was a great idea. I was expecting folks to approach me and place bells and ribbon on me. A great memory now though.Gagetown was also the first time I ever saw the wires of a motor vehicle having to be painted. Our vehicles were always clean and pretty! Great memories, eh!

A few days ago the past caught up with me when I received a letter from Wally Hansen, whoes path I crossed while we were both working at NDHQ in the later 60s. He in turn learned about my whereabouts through Dave Rogers who mentioned my name in this guest book. Thank you Dave. Hope the Forest Service has kept its promise? To both my thanks for pointing me to this well designed and in truly tradional "attention to detail", kept records and stories. Names and faces made my grey cells sit up and pay attention. The faces of my instructors were easily recognized, so did those of you with whom I shared part of my life. I would like to thank the former for preparing me for most of what I had to face, and all others for making me one of the team or supporting me so enthusiastically. But most of all I want to thank the people of this great country who accepted the young German in the summer of 1953 when he came ashore in Halifax with $7 in his pocket.

And this is how the story goes. Carl Bungay sent me an e mail enquiring about a replacement crest for his new blaser to replace the one that shrank. I went to "MY" retired CWO (ya see Big G is self proclaimed 2 i/c of the Kingston MP Luncheon Group working under my command and control (*.*) and as a result of my giving him a tasking Big G has come up with both C Pro C and Thunderbird Blazer Crests. He advises that they are of very high quality and he can obtain them for $20.00 each. It is with great sadness that I report the death of my father, George Stevens, on January 4, 2010, in his 90th year. He was a Warrant Officer in the Crime Lab at CFB Borden, at the time of his retirement from the Armed Forces in 1969. He then worked for the Etobicoke Board of Education until the age of 65. He is predeceased by 7 months, by my mother Jean, with whom he had a long and happy retirement in Alliston, Ontario. It was my privilege to have them both living nearer to me at the time of their respective departures. Dad spoke often, and fondly to me of his years in the Armed Forces, in both war and peace times. He often wondered aloud about his friends and acquaintances from the service, and was happy to have discovered this website a few months ago. He served overseas from 1939 until '45; entered the OPP for a brief period of time back home, then re-entered the service at his former rank of Sergeant in 1951 in Borden. During his service he was stationed in Soest, Halifax and Petawawa (to name 3 that spring to my alleged mind). He was the Rolls Royce of fathers, and is sorely missed by me, and my two brothers. Thank you for your indulgence of my post.

I wish all my C Pro C friends and commrades a very Merry Christmas. My time with the Canadian Provost Corps was a learning experience that I have cherished all of my life. I served from 1953 to 1960. I think at that time I was among the youngest of all recruits. I enlisted on my 17th birthday. Was in Borden, Shilo, Gagetown, and in Germany. Signed up during the Korean Conflict, but was told that I was too young for that, so ended up in Germany. Soest, Hemer, and all of the other detachments. I was so young and full of piss and vinigar, and always getting on my Sergeants nerves, that they sent me to every Provost Detachment in Germany, just to get me away from them. I never met a Provost who did not like me, and I never met a Provost that I did not like. It was a wonderful time of my life, and I will always be grateful for those memories.

Interesting Story: --I had an encounter with a fellow Provost Corporal last week. I was driving to Great Falls Montana for the wekend and stopped to gas up in a small town named Warner Alberta. The owner noticed my Vets licence plate and as the conversation went on, I found out he too had been in the Provost Corps in the 50's and mid 60's. His name is Al Frail, we chatted for some time about the C.Pro.C members were both knew. He asked I forward this on to our guest page letting all that knew him that he is doing well and has many fond memories of his days in the Corps. Al has no email address, however if there's any interest in contacting him, he is the only gas station in Warner and can be reached by telephone at (403) 682-3630 (H) or his cell-(403) 421-0316. Mel, thanks for this. I didn't know unil a few minutes ago that Ed Smythe passed away recently. We worked together years ago and you would know this I think. Also Ed was the Sergeant in charge of the field platoon at Gagetown (68-69) when I knew him and I never worked for a better man unless of course we think about Angus MacPherson who was also our boss around that time. "Hoppy" Hopkins also comes to mind as well as Barry MacPhedran. In the years ahead I went on to CFB London and after 13.5 years I left the military. Like many I moved on to civilian policing and ended up retiring from the OPP in 2006. With your permission I will post a permanent link to your site on mine and if there is anything I can do to assist you let me know by mail. Final thought: How did I come here? It happened because of George Megeney who is making waves in NS as I write. I worked with him also in Gagetown (also his younger brother) and I will be placing an entry about him tomorrow. I was looking for more info on him. Final thoughts -- I'm well pleased that your career worked out for you as well as your site. For now I'll see what I can do to make more people aware it exists because we all hunger for news about the old corps and it's the very least I can do considering that it gave a young man from Northern Ontario a "life" I would not have had otherwise. Sorry to hear that the former guestbook has gone into oblivion... I served from Sept '57 to Sept '60. Was in #57 Corps Training Class, then to 1 Pro. Coy in Borden, then 1 Pro. Pl, in Calgary, back to Shilo then to Valcartier Detachment. I remember some names very fondly, such as Maurice Dube; Pierre Jobin Mtl Det); Donat (Punchy) Levac; Guy Brouillette; Doug Seward; Cpl. Denis Dixon (Later Lt); Frank McDonald, Sgt Genest, and far too many to name off at this time. I ended up going to University in New Zealand amd then was relocated to the US in Dec '79 with a company called Diigital Equipment Corp (now part of HP. Hi Mel: I have visited your website on a number of occasions and I found it very interesting and informative. I joined the Canadian Armed Forces and the C-Pro-C in Dec. 1960 in Quebec city. I served at the Citadelle and Valcartier (basic training), Camp Borden (C-Pro-C School -Group 1 and 2), Camp Petawawa with 2 Provost Pl and Det. and in Soest, Germany for a short period of time in 1962. I got out of the Service at the end of January 1964 and joined the O.P.P. at the beginning of February 1964. I retired from the O.P.P. in June 1994 after a little over 30 years of service. I am still in contact with some of the guys that I have served with and with some that I have met over the years. I enjoy your site and reading the MP NOTEBOOK Side Margins that I am receiving from Dell Blakney. Keep up the good work.

Back in the early 70's at CFB Cornwallis I had a LCol Eric Hill, C Pro C (Retired) working as a Commissionaire at the Main Gate. Just wondered if he was still with us, as I did not see his name in the Honor Roll. Cheers!

Mel: I don't know if you have been made aware that George Roper passed away on 3l Dec 08, and his wife Dora passed away on 4 Jan 09. Funeral services being held atGilbert Funerl Chapel, Selkkrk,MB, at 1:00 p.m. Tues. 6 Jan 09. Sorry I wasn't passing on good news.
