Hi Mel. Enjoyed the visit to your site. While reviewing the list of persons who had passed to the DB in the sky noted you may wish to include Calvin Mahon. He ended his service at Borden MP Detachment and later was employed as the storesman at CFSIS. I do not recall the year of his demise. Perhaps another reader can provide that detail. Regards.

I belong to Branch 593 Bells Corners Legion. Including myself there are 4 former Provost Corp members who are members of the Branch. Bob Grogan, Vance McDougall and John (Red) Wilson. The comrade I see often is Bob Grogan. He and I had a conversation after the Legion General meeting on November 17. I told him that I visited the website often as it is such a great site. I would like to hear from any former 30 Co. C Pro C.

Mel, I just remembered another C Pro C member for the DB in the sky. Lt. Donald Stevens HYATT, 1921-1984. Don served with the C Pro C during WW 2 and didn't return to Canada for discharge until after the Nuremberg Trials. After discharge he worked for the Alberta Provincial Gaols (the Bowden Institution and the Nordegg Gaol. He was Assistant Superintendant of the Nordegg Gaol and that is where I knew him. He is buried in the Town of Bowden, AB. cemetery. He succumed to the big "C". For your info.

Cheers!

In Sept, 1941, I joined the Army and took my basic training in Regina. Following basic training, I joined the Provost Corps (Provost 12A) and was posted to Camp Borden. For the next two years I moved German P.O.W.'s from Halifax/New York to Ontario and Alberta. In June, 1943 I was transferred to Debert, NS to prepare for overseas duty. Debert was an embercation camp (last mustering point for soldiers going overseas). Once there, I was one of approx. 40 MP's selected from 300 to stay in Canada to police the military personnel in and around Debert. I stayed in the Military until Spring, 1946. Upon discharge I moved back to Saskatchewan and took up farming. While farming I became a Regina Realator and joined the Legion of Frontiersman rising to Colonel and Commanding Officer. I am now retired and enjoying my senior living. One of the best Provost Officers I served under was Major BUSH. I would like to hear from anyone who recollects him and/or knew anything about him after the war.

I just returned from attending the Memorial Service for the late Sgt Carl (Duke) Snyder, formerly RCAF Police, who has departed this earth much too soon (age 57). Duke died of a heart attack while shovelling snow at his residence in Enfield, NS, (just outside Halifax) on the 19 Jan 04. He was interned in his home town of Sheet Harbour, NS where the little country church was packed with mourners. In attendance were people from all walks of life, encompassing former members of the military police and the local Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Duke was a very well known and highly respected serviceman/policeman and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. We Will Remember Him!

How many of you old Provost remember the Call-Outs back in the very early 50s. What a bunch of sore heads they were if they were assigned duties at nights, week-ends or holidays they would treaten to take their immediately releases which were available to them within 72 hours. Served on many occassions as a RP (Regimental Policeman) in 52, transfered to the C pro C and posted at No 3 Prov.Coy, Longeuil. As an RP in Fort Frontnac we also had an RP by he Name of Larose. Later on he was transfered to Calgary with LSHD his career ended as a Lt General. Not bad for an ex RPs. For myself; when I was to be posted to DB duties in Borden I elected to remuster to my old corps the CPC in the fall of 52.

Bob Grogan brought this excellent site to my attention some weeks ago. This is my third visit, so I thought I should log in this time. Unless I missed them, I noted three omissions from our obit sections: 2Lt Barry Lowe, killed in an auto accident near Kingston in the summer of 1962; Col A.J. (Tony) Scottie, who I understood passed away in Florida a year or two back; and, Capt Jack Rand (DOD unknown). I met Jack's widow very briefly at a USI funeral a year ago. He's buried here on the Island, so I'll see if I can get details for you. My own roots were in 1 and then 6 Companies (Militia) before transferring to the RF in 1959. Captains Jim Findlay and Jack Rand encouraged me to try for my commission, while then Major Bob Grogan and Capt Lorne Henderson really shaped me into whatever I became... well, they deserve whatever credit there was, while I'll deservedly wear any of the blame. I organize a USI formal dining-in here each spring. Through Night the Light is traditionally the last of the marches played by the band. In the end, we all go back to our roots; I'm enormously proud of my Corps and of those fine men with whom I had the honour to serve. We did set the right example.

Bill

Served 27 years in the Corps and although they made me wear a different hat badge from 1974 onward, the Provost Corps hat badge always remained at the top of my list. They could take the boy out of the Provost Corps by the stroke of a pen but they have never been able to take the Provost out of the boy. To this day. Discipline by example has been a part of my life for the past 41 years and so it shall remain. They who judge me as being too blunt or focused should walk a mile in this old Provost's shoes. Great job Mel! keep up the good work.

Commanded by Major Hogdkiss and Errol Flynn look-alike Capt.Wilson and other members with WW2 experience the 27th was a short drive from the 30 or so Russian divisions in East Germany. The 27th was one of the first units in the new NATO and displaced the British occupation force in Hannover. However their MP component stayed on for a while to familiarize us with policing the city.At that time German Police had little or no jurisdiction over 27th troops and usually detained the trouble-makers for handing over to us. The local police, very militarly correct, some having had MPexperience in WW2. By the way; the British MPs were still connected to us since the 27th formed one Brigade of their 33rd Armoured Division and we were under overall British command on the month-long field exercises. It was a dream come true for me as a teenager turned 18 shortly after arrival. After all,I had free camping tasty British canned puding, my very own Harley- Davidson WW2 motorcycle for detached point duty (mobile and independent for days at a time!) I'm 70 now and in exellent health. I would very much like to hear from anyone who served in the 27th.

Last week I wrote a 6 page Editorial about what I felt of this change of venue, and trade off of Provost for MP. My Lord! Hi Mel. An absolutely fabulous site. I must admit I have been a closet reader for some time, having discovered this site thru the superior investigative training I received in the Corps, somewhat akin to finding an elephant in a telephone booth. It is great seeing all the old names pop up on the screen and I marvel at the fact that some of us lasted this long. I just perused the photos of the Edmonton and Halifax gatherings. God, are we really that old? Got my plates. They look great and will probably go up on the wall. Many thanks. Superb work Mel! To all old comrades: Peace Be With You.

Mr Pittman Brilliant, an absolutely wonderful site. My earliest mentors on joining the MP Branch were old school Provost; accordingly, I was raised to hold strong belief in the Corps motto of Discipline by Example. A history buff, I'm an avid collector of Cdn Provost Corps items, amazing what you can find on EBay. I like many others in the MP Branch am extremely proud of who we are and where are roots began, you're a fine group of folks, I always enjoy the opportunity to chat with each of you who attend our annual Atlantic Regional Mess Dinner in Halifax. Again, Thanks for producing a great site, you've done a fantastic job of further promoting the Corps and your place in our military history.

Cheers

Comments: THANK YOU BOOK FOR OUR VETERANS:
Hi; my name is Kim Shergold I live in Corbeil Ont. Canada. I decided awhile back that I wanted to do something for our Veterans, to show them that the Canadian Public and people across the world will never forget what they did to give us the freedom we enjoy today. From that came the idea of asking the public to send me their Thank You Lettersto our Veterans, to be compiled into a book of war sketches, poems for our Veterans , photo's and information of a Veteran you personally know. Personal stories from our Veterans and their families, also war bride stories. I feel with the above combination it can only bring a better understanding for our Veterans to know we will never forget them, and for us through their stories to understand why we can never forget the sacrifices they made for us. There are people who are rarely mentioned such as bandsman that brought some happiness even if for a short while. Nurses, Doctors, Medics, Journalist etc. I could go on for ever. I hope with this book it may bring old friends together again, and help children(now adults) looking for information on Fathers they maybe never had the chance to get to know because they gave the ultimate sacrifice-their life. For those who agree to help us on this journey I ask that you also send a letter giving us permission to use your article in our book. Please pass this onto your family, friends, newspapers and schools. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank You!

Yours Truly
Kim Shergold
e-mail moon_baby2@hotmail.com
(If you would rather send info by snail mail please contact me at the above e-mail. Thank You!)

THIS IS FOR ALL OUR VETERANS:
First, I would like to personally send you a Huge Thank You for the freedom I enjoy today. I shudder to think what Canada would be like if it were not for our Veterans. I know we can never repay you for the sacrifices you have made for us and are still doing till this day. Words can never really say how I feel in my heart about our Veterans. On November 11th the tears of love and sorrow fall from Heaven above for those who have given their life and for those who still go through their own private hell.I can only hope as the years pass your pain lessens. Next time you feel a raindrop touch your cheek, remember it is someone saying Thank You for the sacrifices you made for complete strangers. As you know their will always be rain and with each sparkling tiny drop that hit's the earth brings beauty and love for our Veterans. Raindrops will never stop neither will the remembrance for our Veterans. You are etched in our hearts forever.

Hi Fellow Veterans During the week-end of 02-03 July we were in Halifax and while there we decided to visit the Citadel Museum etc, and just by chance we discovered Veterans were admitted free of charge during the Year of the Veteran, mind you it is not advertised, it is just passed on verbally. We were told it applied to National Parks and establishments administered by Parks Canada, therefore while visiting any of these establishments ask for the Veteran discount, as a matter of fact it would not hurt to ask for Veterans discount at other establishments not administered by Parks Canada. Pass the word on to other Veterans on you mailing list. Have a nice summer and happy travelling. Hi, my name is Jennifer Paulhus, Laurie Paulhus, Granddaughter. I understand my grampa put a great deal of his life into the Canadian Provost Corps. I found a bunch of CPC stuff, most sharp shooting medals and ribbons. Does Bedouin Golf Club mean anything to anyone? Anyway, he passed a few nights ago, luckily it was peaceful and quickly in his sleep. He was very sick, and his diabetes took a limb from him 5 years ago, so i think he's better off now, in a better place. The service was today, and im sure all of who knew him were with us there today. He never did stop talking about his service to Canada... xo!

Hi! My dad just passed away on the 21st of April at the age of 69. He was a member of the Provost corps, Cpl Avard Bell Ferguson. He always talked about the provost with such pride and honor. I wish I had of know about this site sooner, as I would have ordered a coffen cover for his day of rest. I was honored to have met some of the men from his unit, that showed up for his funeral. Thanks for that.

The AFP/AAC is currently involved if a court battle on behalf of military retirees and the RCMP to recover over $20 BILLION stolen bt the Martin government from the Canadian Forces Superannuation surplus. Plus the "Gold Digger's" clause and a 60% survivor's benefit amongst other discriminations against military retirees!

Date of release: 1965

Comments:

My Dad, Norm Eastaugh passed away on May 17. I would like to thank all of the C Pro C members who left messages in the guestbook on the Ottawa Citizen website. My Dad was a very proud Provost officer, and it meant a lot to my family and myself to see these messages. I remember growing up in various military bases (Petawawa, Shilo, and Borden) until we landed in Ottawa and Dad retired from the forces in 1965. We are having a memorial service for Dad, and interment of his ashes, in Norway Bay Quebec, on July 15,(probably at 1400 hours). It's only an hour north west of Ottawa. Anyone who reads this and would like to attend will be warmly welcomed. After a short service, we will be asking people back to the family cottage to help us celebrate Dad's life. There will be an announcement in the Ottawa Citizen obits to give the final details.
